Bellan] S. C. Hsu and P. M. Bellan firstpage–lastpage 2002 document firstpage abstract This work describes a laboratory plasma experiment and initial results which should give insight into the magnetic dynamics of accretion discs and jets. A high-speed multiple-frame CCD camera reveals images of the formation and helical instability of a collimated plasma, similar to MHD models of disc jets, and also plasma detachment associated with spheromak formation, which may have relevance to disc winds and flares. The plasmas are produced by a planar magnetized coaxial gun. The resulting magnetic topology is dependent on the details of magnetic helicity injection, namely the force-free state eigenvalue imposed by the coaxial gun.

Effect of the temperature profile of the accretion disk on the structure of jets and outflows around protostars
Magnetic fields play an important role in creating, driving, and in the evolution of outflows and jets from protostars and accretion disks. On the other hand, the temperature profile of the accretion disks may also affect the structure of the magnetic field and outflows. In this paper, we use the self-similar method in cylindrical coordinates to investigate the effect of the temperature profile...
متن کامل3D MHD Simulations of Laboratory Plasma Jets
Jets and outflows are thought to be an integral part of accretion phenomena and are associated with a large variety of objects. In these systems, the interaction of magnetic fields with an accretion disk and/or a magnetized central object is thought to be responsible for the acceleration and collimation of plasma into jets and wider angle flows. In this paper we present three-dimensional MHD si...
متن کاملMagnetized accretion-ejection structures IV. Magnetically-driven jets from resistive, viscous, Keplerian discs
We present steady-state calculations of self-similar magnetized accretion discs driving cold, adiabatic, non-relativistic jets. For the first time, both the magnetic torque due to the jets and a turbulent “viscous” torque are taken into account. This latter torque allows a dissipation of the accretion power as radiation at the disc surfaces, while the former predominantly provides jets with pow...
متن کاملStability and heating of magnetically driven jets from Keplerian accretion discs
We have performed 3-D numerical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) jet experiments to study the instabilities associated with strongly toroidal magnetic fields. In contemporary jet theories, a highly wound up magnetic field is a crucial ingredient for collimation of the flow. If such magnetic configurations are as unstable as found in the laboratory and by analytical estimates, our understanding of MHD ...
متن کاملMHD disc winds
This is a doctorate level lecture on the physics of accretion discs driving magnetically self-confined jets, usually referred to in the literature as disc winds. I will first review the governing magnetohydrodynamic equations and then discuss their physical content. At that level, necessary conditions to drive jets from keplerian accretion discs can already be derived. These conditions are vali...
